McMillin Center Kick-Off Draws Hundreds

The center becomes a reality after a $1.5 million donation from the McMillin family.

More than 300 people attended the official kick-off of the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate at É«ÇéÊÓÆµ. The reception featured keynote speeches by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and É«ÇéÊÓÆµ President Stephen L. Weber.

The event took place at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center on É«ÇéÊÓÆµâ€™s campus on Thursday, Sept. 23.

Declaring the day

During his address, Sanders declared it the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate Day in San Diego as he presented a plaque to Corky McMillin’s sons, Mark and Scott McMillin.

Mark McMillin, ’79, also took the stage and discussed how the family had donated $1.5 million to found the center six years ago. He also spoke about the issues, setbacks and successes in finally making the center a reality.

Enhancing real estate education

The Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate was established to meet three objectives:

  • Improve the educational experience of É«ÇéÊÓÆµ real estate majors and students interested in real estate
  • Promote high-quality academic real estate research
  • Provide value-added products and services for the real estate industry

In addition to Sanders and McMillin, other speakers included:

  • Mike Neal (’84, real estate, ’96, M.S.), chair of É«ÇéÊÓÆµâ€™s real estate advisory board and CEO/President of H.G. Fenton Company
  • Gail Naughton, dean of É«ÇéÊÓÆµâ€™s College of Business Administration
  • Michael Lea, director of The Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate
  • Bryan Clark, president of the Real Estate Society of É«ÇéÊÓÆµ
